Dairy | CAVL Autogenous Vaccines
Custom Vaccines Commercial, broad-application type vaccines may not be specific enough to give the level of protection you and your clients need. CAVL can work with veterinarians to collect samples, isolate the disease causing bacteria, and jointly develop a custom-made, strain-specific vaccine.
Visit the CAVL website.
Depending on your needs CAVL can make a vaccine for a specific client or a vaccine specific for your practice.
-
CAVL Custom Vaccines target the
specific diseases affecting your herd
-
CAVL custom vaccines are designed to
pinpoint the specific bacterial pathogens affecting a herd.
Pathogenic bacteria frequently express different surface antigens
and exhibit diverse antibiotic resistance patterns.
-
CAVL can work with you to select the
most resistant bacteria for your custom-made vaccine. For over 25
years, CAVL has worked jointly with veterinarians and their
clients with the following bacteria:
- Pasteurella multocida
- Haemophilus somnus
- Moraxella bovis
- Pasteurella haemolytica
- Salmonella species
- Escherichia coli
-
CAVL recommends an initial vaccination
followed by a booster vaccination in 10 to 14 days. Each
custom-made vaccine can be produced in a four-week period, from
the time of bacterial isolation until the finished product is
available for shipment. Our technical and professional support
staff is available to service client needs and answer questions
concerning your custom-made vaccine.
-
We’ll help you track and address
disease changes which might affect your herd.
-
CAVL monitors the epidemiology of
numerous organisms of importance to veterinarians and producers.
Shifts in pathogens or antibiotic resistance can have a profound
effect on animal health decisions.
-
A summary of bacteria isolated in the
CAVL diagnostic laboratory, as well as a summary of antibiotic
sensitivity profiles found in an area, can be sent to you on a
quarterly basis. This summary will allow you to compare the
bacterial isolates and sensitivity patterns from an area with the
overall results obtained by the CAVL diagnostic lab from others in
the vicinity. This can provide additional information to keep you
updated about newly emerging pathogens.
It is important to remember that newly
isolated pathogens can be added to a custom-made vaccine any time
that a new production run is started. As a result, CAVL can work
with veterinarians to add or delete isolates as the epidemiologic
profile of a herd dictates. The process of periodic sampling
allows CAVL to adjust to changing needs.
This free service is provided to CAVL
vaccine clients. Details on other CAVL program specials will also
be included in the periodic summaries so be sure to watch for
them.
All CAVL custom-made vaccines are
produced in accordance with USDA guidelines and meet all safety
and sterility requirements. To find out more about how CAVL’s

COLLECTION & TRANSPORTATION
Collection and transportation of specimens
When submitting samples for isolation we suggest the following
guidelines be used:
- Pasteurella haemolytica and multocida (in order of most to least
preferred sample:)
Lung, mediastinal lymph nodes, tracheal washings, laryngeal swabs,
nasal swabs.
- Haemophilus somnus (in order of most to least preferred sample:)
Lung, brain, mediastinal lymph nodes, joint fluid, tracheal
washings, laryngeal
swabs, nasal swabs.
- Salmonella (in order of most to least preferred sample:)
Gall bladder, bile, small intestine, mesenteric lymph nodes,
liver, feces, rectal swabs.
Nasal and Rectal Swabs, tissue
Samples:
- Remove sterile swab from plastic tube. Do not touch swab to
anything so as not to
contaminate it.
- Wipe inside the nasal cavity with a paper towel. Insert sterile
swab as far into the
nasal cavity as possible, once inserted be sure to rub on the
inside of the nostril and
rotate. Be careful not to touch outside of nose when entering or
withdrawing swab.
For rectal swab lift tail and insert swab into rectum and rotate.
Again be careful
removing swab.
- Insert swab into plastic tube pushing down into media. When
using culturettes,
crush ampule between thumb and finger and push swab into media.
- For tissue samples, collect about a 3-inch cube of lung, liver,
etc. and a 4-inch piece
of intestine. Place each tissue in a separate whirl-pak bag.
Collect the area of
tissue that exhibits gross lesions.
- Label tube or bag with as much information as possible: Lot
number, pen number,
tag number, type of swab (nasal or rectal).
- Keep samples cool. Ship as soon as possible.
Transportation of Samples
- Pack in cardboard box or
Styrofoam cooler.
- Enclose frozen polar paks to keep samples cool, even in cool
weather. Do not place
ice paks directly against samples.
- Protect samples with newspaper or some other form of packing
material.
